The activities of the research group

The Applied Informatics Group is one of the key research and development units of the Department of Automation and Applied Informatics at BME VIK.

The group’s activities cover the full spectrum of software development - from theoretical research to practical implementation.

Our main research and development areas include

  • Applied Artificial Intelligence: integration of AI models and technologies into industrial, educational, and research environments.
  • AI Engineering tasks: design, development, testing, and operation of artificial intelligence systems in a scalable and reliable form.
  • Artificial Intelligence in practice: solving concrete industrial and research problems with AI and machine learning tools (e.g. predictive analytics, image processing, natural language processing).
  • Software development methodologies and technologies: development of efficient, maintainable, and scalable software within modern architectures.
  • Modern native and cross-platform mobile software development: design and implementation of Android, iOS, and multiplatform (e.g. Flutter, React Native) applications for research and industrial purposes.
  • Modern web solutions: development of responsive, user-friendly, and secure web applications and services based on the latest frontend and backend technologies.
  • Cloud-based solutions and architectures: design and operation of scalable, containerized, microservice-based systems (in AWS, Azure, GCP environments).
  • DevOps and MLOps environment setup: automation of development and machine learning processes, creation of CI/CD pipelines, model deployment and monitoring systems to support continuous integration and development.
  • Big Data and Business Intelligence: processing, analysis, and visualization of large datasets to support decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Smart data collection and IoT systems: design and optimization of data-driven infrastructures and sensor networks.

The group carries out research, development, and consulting activities alike. It takes part in:

  • the development of prototypes and demonstration systems,
  • the implementation of concrete software projects,
  • product design and technology consulting,
  • as well as supporting innovation projects with industrial and academic partners.

Educational activity

The group’s educational activity is closely linked to its research directions. The group continuously updates and improves the list of taught subjects, several of which already focus on applied artificial intelligence, efficient coding, and the latest tools and methodologies of modern software development.

Our goal is to provide students with practical experience based on real projects, enabling them to enter the industry with competitive knowledge.

Results

The group participates in numerous industrial and R&D projects. Current projects include, among others, the detection of DeepFake AI content, the development of an AI-based modern content management framework, mobile application development, and machine vision-based defect detection.
