Publication

Where to publish?

Publishing in internationally recognised, high-ranking forums is of paramount importance for the Faculty, and through this we can show our leadership in the field of domestic research and development. At the moment, the recognition of journal publications in national and international scientific evaluation systems is much higher than that of conference papers. At the same time, conference publications are also important, and personal encounters with the community provide opportunities for new collaborations and joint projects.Accordingly, scientific results should be targeted first to a highly ranked journal with a high impact factor. In case of an unsuccessful attempt, the article can still be sent on to other destinations, but experience shows that researchers often underestimate their own work. Some useful links for checking the quality of journals:

  • Journal Citation Reports – Official source of impact factors. The WoS ratings (quartile Q1-Q4) of the journal is also available here, on the profile page of the journal. This service requires a subscription and is only available via the university network.
  • Scimago Journal & Country Rank – The most popular journal ranking service, available without subscription. Scimago also ranks by quartile (Q1-Q4), but beware, this ranking is not the same as the WoS ranking. Some sites (e.g. MTMT) use the Scimago ranking, others (e.g. MTA) use the WoS ranking.
  • The Nature Index journals – The Nature index journals have the highest prestige in science. Unfortunately, in the research fields of the Faculty most of these journals are not relevant, but if someone manages to get an article published in a Nature index journals, it has serious news value and boosts the Faculty’s image enormously.

Recently, the Open Access model has become increasingly popular among journals, where, unlike the traditional model, you pay for publishing the article, but not for accessing it. The University’s subscriptions to the scientific literature offer numerous OA publishing opportunities, including popular journals from major publishers. The vast majority of these opportunities are unrestricted, meaning that any article published with a BME affiliation is automatically published for free. Some of them (e.g. IEEE journals) impose an annual quota for OA articles. It is worth taking advantage of these opportunities, as OA articles have much higher visibility, reach many more researchers. The current list of OA journals subscribed by the University is available at the link below:

It is worth noting that the MDPI publications, popular for their fast review and publication times, are highly divisive. A significant part of the scientific community considers all MDPI journals almost predatory, even if some are highly ranked Q1 journals. It should be noted that some jury members may give these journals less weight/value when evaluating publications.

The professional community often considers certain conference articles to be more valuable than journals, but we have to accept that not all plenaries recognise this. One reason for this is that for conferences there is no widely used measure is available such as the impact factor or quartile for journals. Nevertheless, there are sites where you can check the conference, it is worth taking a look before submitting:

Maintenance of publication lists

All researchers at the Faculty are required to record the details of their publications in the MTMT system. Results not included here will not appear in the institutional queries and will be considered as non-existent for the Faculty. The precise recording of articles also requires the assignment of the affiliation for every single author of the paper, which unfortunately is not done automatically by MTMT. According to the affiliation protocol detailed below, the University and the Department must be indicated as the primary affiliation for all colleagues and students employed by the Faculty. Further (potentially external) affiliations can of course be recorded, too.The ranking organisations collect publication data from the Scopus and WoS databases, so it’s a good idea to check occasionally that all the important publications appear there. However, maintenance of Scopus and WoS records is not expected to be done by the authors, we are looking for a faculty-level solution for automatic synchronisation with MTMT. (These databases require a subscription and are only available via the BME network.)

Affiliation protocol

It does matter how the authors’ affiliations appear on the papers. The ranking organisation’s data collection software must be able to clearly identify the university based on the affiliation given. Without this, the article will not be linked to the university in the evaluation of the university’s scientific activity. The publication must include the official full name of the author’s department within the university, followed, if possible, by the official full name of the faculty, and finally the official full name of the university. If there is not enough space, the name of the Faculty may be omitted, but not the other components. Example:

Department of Networked Systems and Services, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Műegyetem rkp. 3., H-1111 Budapest, Hungary.

Acknowledgements

The majority of research projects and grants require that the publications resulting from the grant include a special acknowledgement text. Depending on the document template used by the publisher, the acknowledgement may be either on the first page (typically as a footnote) or on the last page as a separate section (e.g. “Acknowledgement”). The achkowledgements for the projects most relevant to the faculty are the following:

  • OTKA:
„This work was supported by the OTKA X-XXXXXX grant.”
  • ÚNKP:
„Supported by the «Pályázott_ösztöndíj_pályázati_kódja» New National Excellence Program of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology from the source of the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund.”
  • Bolyai:
„This work was supported by the János Bolyai Research Scholarship of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.”
  • TKP2021-NVA:
„The research reported in this paper is part of project no. BME-NVA-02, implemented with the support provided by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Hungary from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund, financed under the TKP2021 funding scheme.”
  • TKP2021-EGA:
„This research was funded by the National Research, Development, and Innovation Fund of Hungary under Grant TKP2021-EGA-02.”
